Ganguro Oni-chan process

1. The Concept: "What If… But Make It Neon?"

I’ve always loved the contrast of Oni (big, scary demons) and Ganguro (the iconic 90s Japanese fashion trend—think tanned skin, neon makeup, and enough glitter to blind the sun). So, naturally, I thought: "What if I mashed them together like a mad scientist?"

Spoiler: This was either genius or a cry for help. This is another piece of my ongoing exploration on Monster Girls series.

2. The Sketch Phase: "Anatomy? Never Met Her."

I’ll admit it—I got cocky. "I don’t need references!" I said. "I know what a face looks like!" I lied.

Cue:

  • The first sketch looking like a potato with fangs.

  • Le me~ taking reference pictures

3. The Color Crisis: "Why Are There 50 Shades of orange?"

Ganguro fashion is all about bold, clashing colors—which is great until you realize you’ve accidentally created a neon nightmare.

Highlights include:

  • Spending 2 hours mixing the perfect orange… only to realize it looked like a little too crazy with the blue eyes.

4. The "I Should’ve Quit While I Was Ahead" Moment

Every artist has that one step where things go off the rails. I was hating how this hand was turning out. I added some more acessories and...powered through lol

5. The Final Product: "Wait… This Actually Slaps?"

After approximately 37 mental breakdowns, I stepped back and realized… oh no, I love her.

The neon colors pop, the exaggerated features work, and the details? Chef’s kiss.

Moral of the story:

  • Art is a journey of suffering and glitter.

  • References are your friends.

Outro:So yeah, that’s the tale of my Oni Ganguro piece. She’s chaotic, she’s extra, and she’s definitely judging me for all the mistakes I made along the way. But hey—if you don’t hate your art at least three times while making it, are you even an artist?

Now tell me: What’s the most unhinged art piece you’ve ever forced into existence? (I need validation that I’m not alone.)
